For thousands of years Kashi has drawn pilgrims, sages and scholars; it has long been a centre of Sanskrit learning and devotion. The poet-saints Kabir and Tulsidas are both associated with the city, and the Buddha gave his first teaching at nearby Sarnath.
Varanasi is the city of Shiva, and Kashi Vishwanath is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. Many Hindus hold that dying in Kashi brings moksha — liberation from the cycle of rebirth — which is why the cremation ghats are central to its sacred life.
