As Constantinople, the city was the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire and the heart of Orthodox Christianity; Hagia Sophia was completed in 537. After 1453 it became the Ottoman capital, and Sufi lodges (tekke) spread through its neighbourhoods. The Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople still has its seat here.
