Ephesus was a great city of the Roman world and home of the Temple of Artemis. Paul preached here, and in 431 the Council of Ephesus declared Mary the Theotokos, the God-bearer. Tradition holds that John the Apostle lived and was buried here; Justinian’s basilica rose over his tomb.
The House of the Virgin Mary is venerated by Christians and Muslims alike as a place where Mary is believed to have spent her last years. Ephesus is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
