Cappadocia was a centre of early Christianity; the Cappadocian Fathers — Basil the Great, Gregory of Nazianzus and Gregory of Nyssa — came from this region. Monastic communities carved chapels and cells into the rock, and the painted churches of Göreme date largely from the tenth to twelfth centuries.
